Elk Bovine Tuberculosis Monitoring Program
Bovine tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious and communicable disease caused by bacteria. It affects cattle, bison, deer, elk, goats, and other species, including humans. Elk and deer hunters in the Bovine TB Surveillance Area (Game Hunting Areas 23 and 23A, 18,18A, 18B, 18C and 13A) are asked to submit elk and deer heads and lungs. The samples are examined for bovine TB. What can hunters do? Fully participate in the surveillance of elk and deer for bovine TB. It is important that samples from all elk and deer be submitted. Just because there are no abnormal growths does not mean that the animal is not infected.
